SAMOTHRACE,
A FLOATING MOUNTAIN
The first thing that catches the eye as the boat approaches Samothrace is the sheer size of Mount Saos. With its high, steep slopes and deep, green gorges, this impressive mountain dominates the landscape.
The island is a place of exceptional natural beauty: oak forests, chestnut, walnut, mulberry and plane trees all the way down to the beaches, myrtle bushes and flowering oleanders, orchards and olive groves; its lush vegetation is everywhere thanks to the streams and rivers that create waterfalls and pools. The hot thermal springs and pools are an invitation to relax.
In ancient times Samothrace was an important religious centre where the famous Cabeirian mysteries were celebrated to worship the Great Gods. Today the island seems to be forgotten, an isolated corner of Greece on the edge of Europe. However, the magic atmosphere of the home of the famous Nike of Samothrace remains intact.
